The Storage Drum That Saved Howdy Doody’s Life

The Storage Drum That Saved Howdy Doody’s Life

The year was 1961; Rufus had been working in the workshop area of the house, which was home for Doodyville. Rufus turned down his old tube radio to answer the telephone. During the night the radio ignited and the consequent fire burned the studio. When daylight came the facility was gutted and all was thought lost. As Chris Rose recalls (son of Rufus and Margo), an eerie-like triage was performed out on the lawn after the smoke cleared and sun came up. After losing a large proportion of their cherished puppets and figuring that Howdy and his friends were goners, it was discovered that this barrel had saved the burning of the original Howdy Doody.
