The Bat That Babe Ruth Used To Hit His 52nd Homerun Of The 1921 Season

The Bat That Babe Ruth Used To Hit His 52nd Homerun Of The 1921 Season

Batter up! The year is 1921...and the Sultan of Swat is having a season that winds up setting one major league record after another...59 home runs! 457 total bases! 171 runs batted in. Not bad for a 26 year old! Stepping up to the plate on one September day during that 1921 season, Babe Ruth took hold of his 45 ounce Louisville Slugger and slugged homer number 52. Another home run for the record books. But this time...we’re keeping our eye on the bat behind this home run. It’s the one that we’re following because without a doubt, this is the best and most documented Ruth bat we have ever handled. Take a good close look. The bat looks like a fine piece of elegant furniture. A first class quality look, matched by an ultra smooth “comfortable in the hands” feel. Manufactured from the finest wood by Hillerich & Bradsby Co., it has the engraved U.S. Pat. Office Trade Mark as well as an engraved name “George ‘Babe’ Ruth” burned into the barrel. Above the Ruth facsimile signature are the many marks from a power hitter, the heavy scoring was actually done by Babe himself. Ruth did this to create a rougher hitting surface on the bat. This classic specimen of power perfection is so perfectly preserved that it’s uncracked. The only blemish (if you would call it that) is a very slight flattening on one side of the knob. Inside the center brand, it reads model 125. This is a beautiful specimen of power--a genuine war club! It measures 3 feet--36 inches of sleek timber. Some sports historians have referred to Ruth’s prowess by claiming he was superior to all other ballplayers in hitting power. This bat is one of the nicest and earliest Ruth bats. The bat is Babe Ruth through and through, and from beginning to end. From the time it left Babe’s hands, it has remained with the Borgman family. Documentation that is included with this bat includes newspaper articles and a letter tracing the bat’s movement. A typewritten letter on the stationery of the Hotel Ansonia of New York states, “Here is the bat that hit the ball that brought me my fifty-second home run. It served me well in baseball...it is yours with my compliments at any rate.” The signature Babe Ruth (signed by an assistant) is under the salutation, “Yours in baseball.” A newspaper article reports that Babe Ruth has presented this prize bat to Harry Borgman, who received it by winning a newspaper contest. Over 80 years have passed since Babe held this bat and, to repeat, once Harry Borgman and the Borgman family got their hands on it, they never let go. Until now. In what may be one of the most heretofore untouchable historic opportunities not only in the history of Babe Ruth memorabilia, but also one of the biggest prizes in baseball history, period, this Babe Bat is ready to be transferred from the Borgman family to...You! As legendary as the bat behind Ruth home run number 52 was, the legend lives on, and this timber torch is now ready to be passed on.
