Brooklyn 1914 Johnson Trolley Fare Box by Johnson - Took Fans & Players to Ebbets Field

Brooklyn 1914 Johnson Trolley Fare Box by Johnson - Took Fans & Players to Ebbets Field

Here's a vintage piece with a great connection to Brooklyn baseball history. This fare box is of a kind used by trolleys to bring fans to and from Ebbetts Field and it has a patent date of 1914, but of course could have been made later. It has a black painted steel housing with nickel plated accessories. It has lots of patina but is all original and complete. One glass is cracked, an easy fix, and this one has the large change hopper on the bottom. It's a solid 24" high, 8.25" wide, and 7.5" deep, made by Johnson Fare Box Co. It requires 12 volt power and we have not tested it, though the mechanisms seem to be free. Ebbetts Field opened just one year before the patent date, in 1913, and through their many early nicknames, the shortened version of "Trolley Dodgers" is the one that eventually became official.
