6/14/70 Louis Armstrong ALS

6/14/70 Louis Armstrong ALS

A year before his death, Louis thanks a friend for the gift of a trombone. He enthuses about cleaning it up and having a case made for it, and says that he and his wife Lucille "went mad over the horn." It ends, "From your friends, Satchmo and Lucille Armstrong." The down note is his sadly prophetic comment that "I have been back in the hospital...I was really sick this time. Everybody thought that I would die." The signature in blue pen is 8/10. Plain paper, 8 1/2 x 10 1/2", slightly yellowed, light fold mark. VG-EX. With original envelope.
