1985 Spend a Buck Garden State Stakes Championship Cloth

1985 Spend a Buck Garden State Stakes Championship Cloth

Not only is this magnificent satin cloth indicative of Spend a Buck's 1985 victory at the Garden State Stakes, but it represents a pivotal moment in thoroughbred history. Measuring 42x76", this white cloth with yellow trim reads, "The Garden State Stakes, 1985, $300,000" on each side in stitched yellow letters, and shows great use with some dirt marks. Spend a Buck won the Cherry Hill Mile and this race to have a chance to claim a $2 million bonus offered by track owner Robert Brennan. To do so, Buck's owners decided to forego a chance at the Triple Crown after winning the Kentucky Derby, to participate in the Jersey Derby, which Buck did win to claim the prize. As a direct result, Triple Crown races began offering similar monetary incentives to prevent future champs from skipping their races.
