Historic remembrance from the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. 1962 Ernie Davis game worn jersey from The Coaches' All-America Game, played on June 29, 1962, in Buffalo, New York. Considered All-America Game II. In 1961, Davis became the first African-American Heisman recipient. A great halfback, he followed in the Syracuse University footsteps of great Syracuse back Jim Brown. Davis was the first pick of the 1962 NFL draft as he was selected by the Washington Redskins and then quickly traded to the Cleveland Browns. This is the last jersey Davis ever wore in a game. After this game, the great Syracuse running back was scheduled to join the College All-Stars in Chicago and then the Cleveland Browns, however Davis was diagnosed with leukemia and never played again. Blue jersey with yellow "44" numbers on front, back and sleeves. Champion Knitwear tag on front tail. Purchased from Ernie's nephew, Reggie McLee, after Ernie's mother died. LOA from Ernie's nephew, Reggie McLee. What makes this jersey even more special, is that Davis is shown wearing this exact Jersey in the Coaches All America game in the referenced Wire Photo. This photo will be included to the winner. This jersey shows nice game use, and is in excellent condition.
