1935 Babe Ruth's Last Homerun Advertising Broadside

1935 Babe Ruth's Last Homerun Advertising Broadside

This is the stuff of legends and lore - the only one of these that we have ever seen! When this was printed, no one had a clue The Babe would be hitting his last home run in this very game. Not only did he hit one, he hit THREE, half of his total for the season, which was his last as he had hit the end of the road. By May 25, 1935, Ruth was a mere shadow of himself, and was just days away from retiring from the game he had single-handedly galvanized. This paper poster measures 21" x 14" and is mounted on linen, advertising the contest held for Pittsburgh Press newspaper carriers to meet the living legend (this was Ruth's only season in the National League, making him a major draw in cities that had never seen him). The picture in the middle of the poster is of Ruth batting on the 1934 Tour of Japan. There are a few fold lines, but otherwise, the item appears to be in EX condition. The huge, red headline beckons: "COME ON GANG! WE ARE GOING TO MEET BABE RUTH IN PERSON!" Ruth - who hit a career-low .181 in 72 at-bats that final season - put on a show that afternoon, going 4-4 with six RBI and his third home run - in the 7th inning - actually cleared the old roof at Forbes Field, which had never been done before. Ruth's Boston Braves lost to the Pirates that day, 11-7, but that was hardly out of the ordinary as Boston finished with one of the worst records in baseball history at 38-115.
