1934 R136 Sky Birds card #90, ‘Wild Bill’ Wellman Original Artwork

1934 R136 Sky Birds card #90, ‘Wild Bill’ Wellman Original Artwork

The Sky Birds set by National Chicle features famous pilots and airplanes of the day, and has always been regarded as one of the most popular of all 1930's non-sport gum card sets, in part because of its bright colors, sharp details, art deco designs, and popular subject matter. Offered here is the original artwork for Sky Birds #90 – ‘Wild Bill’ Wellman. Well-known by his contemporaries as the man who didn’t quit until he finished ‘the job’, Wellman often followed German fighters back to their home airfields, where he would reappear and finish the job. The artwork itself is in superb condition with bright, original colors and very little wear. 1/8” borders are clean save for ‘Wild Bill Wellman’ lightly and neatly written in pencil on the lower left obverse. The back also has ‘Wild Bill Wellman’ written in pencil with a modest amount of glue residue showing. The artwork measures approximately 4 ½ inches by 5 ½ inches and has been hand painted on a thick illustration board. An original of card #90 is included, itself in dazzling EX-MT condition. Original artwork from this popular series is beautiful and rare; have it framed and make it a cornerstone of your collection!
