Cities of the Plain by Marcel Proust, first four volumes personally owned by Joan Crawford. Each volume features a hand written note from a man named "Charlie" and dated 1938. One note reads, "My heart is "captive" to your soul" and another "To Joan darling, Please open this book in 1943 - and read the Cities of the Plain - or perhaps a few passages therefore - Before your husband goes to bed."
