1867 Harvard University Baseball Carte de Visite

1867 Harvard University Baseball Carte de Visite

The first we have seen of its kind, this carte de visite is of the 1867 Harvard University baseball team including George A. Flagg, one of the game's pioneers who founded the "Harvard Base Ball Club" pictured here. The players are numbered on front with a corresponding handwritten roster appearing on the back, along with the photgrapher's name, "John A. Whipple." The "Harvard Nine," as the team was called, was formed in 1862 by Flagg, who graduated in 1866 from Harvard, and his friend Frank Wright. There is some minor wear to the photo, with two small pinholes at top and one on bottom, but it is otherwise in VG-EX condition. It shows great contrast and measures 2.5x4".
